Are you heading to WPPI? | Las Vegas Wedding Photographers

It seems like just yesterday I was attending my first WPPI in 2008.   I was so excited to hear from some amazing speakers and delve into a wealth of new knowledge.

I had been following the PIF blog and had offered to help at the first PIF party that year.  This is where I met, in person, Lindsay Teal, whose brainchild the PIF blog was.  If you don’t know of it, it’s a photographers resource, so make sure to check it out.

I was going to WPPI by myself and would for 3 years before Josh joined me for the first time last year.  If you know me, I am not an outgoing extrovert, in fact I get very anxious and shy around people I don’t know.  I’m not one who strikes up conversations. (although over the years it has gotten MUCH easier)  The thing is, WPPI kind of forces you step outside your comfort zone and do things you might not normally do.  ( keep a clean mind people)  :)

This is now my 5th year going and EVERY year I walk away with something new… be it ways to enhance my skills, tips to improve my business, or amazing new friends.   I value everything I gain from the experience and no two people will take away the same experience.

Sitting in my first classes, I remember Doug Gordon on his flow posing, his personality so large it took me by surprise, viewing breathtaking imagery from Jim Garner as he explained the experiential shooting style and then the 3rd year taking master classes from Cliff Mautner on lighting ( he shoots Nikon too, whoot!) and last year from the amazing Jose Villa.   I have pages of notes. (handwritten of course, I am not the lag my laptop around with me and do it digitally type of person)

If you have never been, be prepared.  You WILL BE overwhelmed… first of all it is Las Vegas, a city that truly never sleeps and it can seduce you with its glowing neon lights, happy slot machine sounds, and the dream of a big win…  (I always drop a few bucks here or there just in case) but on top of all that, you are going to have information delivered to you every few hours that will excite you, ignite your passion, and make your head spin.  You will walk the tradeshow floor, wishing you had an endless bank account, feeling elation when you purchase great deals, or jealousy when you can’t.  ( jealousy is ok in small doses, it can be healthy and drive you to work harder for the next year)  { i am not a doctor, so i cannot endorse that last statement} And you will meet people that will change your life… forever.

Here are some helpful tips for those of you attending:

~Grab some bottled water at Walgreens or CVS on the strip, keep drinking, keep hydrated… it is DRY in Vegas (some of you might be hungover too) and you don’t want to go broke buying hotel bottled water… unless you’re gambling, then they give you free small bottles of water. (if you can pass on the free cocktails)  lol
~Have purell or hand sanitizer with you at ALL times, there is a lot of people touching a lot of things.. and you WILL get sick if you don’t take care of yourself… That said, some airbourne or emergen-c wouldn’t hurt either.
~Bring a TON of business cards, they do drawings in the classes for giveaways and they are good to handout to all the new friends you will be making… It’s called NETWORKING people!
~Plan out your day and make sure you get to your classes on time or they might fill up.  Have a backup class chosen if you don’t get in, or change your mind, or… if you just are not feeling the class you are in… it happens to all of us.
~Dress for comfort during the day (flats, a sweater, hoodie, or cardigan) it can get chilly in the classrooms.  Dress to impress at night.  It is Vegas after all!!!
~While your stocking up on bottled water, some hotel rooms have mini kitchens… if yours does grab some fruit, a box of cereal, trail mix, whatever… having snacks handy during the day will save you MONEY.
~If you HAVE to have your Starbucks fix… get ready to stand in line, you are NOT alone.
~You don’t need to carry your camera to classes, (unless its a hands on)  you will just get a sore neck from lugging it around… if you take it to the tradeshow they will put a nifty colorful zip tie on it, so they know you didn’t steal it.
~Speaking of tradeshow, you do not have to take every flyer you get handed… you will end up with 20lbs of “stuff” and with airline’s fees nowadays you don’t want to be even close to the weight limit.  If you do take everything you get, go through it before you leave… trust me you don’t need ALL of it… make a gameplan of what you are shopping for, which booths you HAVE to go to, and where they are.
~Try to get out and SHOOT.  Hey you could always attend one of my styled shoots, shameless plug for my shoots in, 3, 2, 1…
Monday- http://emmajanephotography.contactmystudio.com/workshops/3128f93472074ef6
Wednesday-http://ghosttownthesequel.eventbrite.com
or someone else’s styled shoot, or just going with a group of people… Las Vegas is a place like NO other… so getting some amazing shots of the strip are a must.

So now we come to the FUN part of this POST……..

My buddy George over at WPPI was more then happy to provide me a complimentary registration to give away.   So……. I’m not going to make you go like my Facebook pages……..

I’ve never gone to WPPI before and it would be just what this girl with a camera needs right now! I have been taking baby steps for the past year to brace myself for the bumpy road we call becoming a professional photographer. I have researched, planned and organized my buinsess (not including actual camera time)for hundreds of hours, I have taken workshops, and I am ready to put my buisness out for the world to see and embrace (hopefully). Yet I feel like I need that one extra push (shove) in the right direction, another encouraging story of a beginner following their dream and succeding. It can be a lonely world figuring out how to do this profession in an enourmous sea of professionals…rather than drown in this sea; I say throw me in the water and see if I can swim with the big fish.

My husband and I started our photo business together last year. We got married in May 2011 and realized that we never got to see eachother while he was working as a lawyer. Photography has always been our passion, whether it's shooting weddings or taking travel photos, and so far our business is going great! We would love the opportunity to attend WPPI this year to learn more about the business, make new friends and take fun classes! Thanks and have a lovely night! http://bowerbirdphotography.com/

I feel like my life has been in limbo for way too long. This will be the 2nd step to making my dream come true. First step was saying out loud I am a professional photographer. I want to learn and absorb all I can from those around me, new people I meet and every seminar I can find. WPPI will help me with the next step OUT of limbo, from old me to new and improved me.

I believe this sums it up as to my desire to experience such an amazing event: WPPI=WONDERFUL PEOPLE PHOTOGRAPHING INNOVATION… and I would LOVE to join in that!

Last year was my first, and it was amazing and very motivating. I could so use that again this year. Struggling pet photographer, and just got through some medical issues with my beloved Service dog. Vet specialists and diagnostics has left me very broke and in much need of bookings! I'm just grateful he's recovering and up for being able to trek around Vegas enough to go. Thanks for the opportunity!

Last year was my first year not attending WPPI, as my business transitioned from filling a want, to filling a need. Now as I work in making myself as productive and profitable as possible, I'm craving going back to the days of the FUN. The passion is still 100% there, but I feel starved, with a deep need, a craving… I am hoping to win a convention pass, because otherwise I will again this year be staying home. For anyone considering attending, my first year was life changing and it has been for each of my friends who have attended too. Everyone should go at least once. My biggest piece of advice is to follow your heart and your interests, and attend speakers who interest you, even if they do not focus on your type of photography.

Kristen McCabe - January 31, 2012 - 7:23 am

I attended only the trade show last year – and the amount I learned from speakers at the booths was fantastic! I left WPPI ready to try Everything!

Tamara Crackenberger Roach - January 31, 2012 - 4:36 am

I have been to WPPI the past couple years and every year I come back with lots of great information. This year has been a struggle with wedding bookings and portrait sessions overall. I really need this WPPI trip this year to keep my motivation up and not be so down about the loss of bookings. I need some fresh, new ideas to bring back to the studio that will help me to increase my bookings. With money being so tight this year, this would be awesome to win. Thanks for the contest and giving someone the chance at this awesome opportunity!

Im rooting on YOU winning this!

I’ve heard so many amazing things about WPPI, and I’d love to go! One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever gotten is to NEVER STOP LEARNING, and I find that it’s so true. Events like WPPI give me the opportunity to learn so much and are totally priceless.

Delanae Lindstrom - January 30, 2012 - 11:09 am

Hi Emma!

So great you are doing this. I cannot go this year and it’s killing me! Bjorn has had too many health issues and right now we’re just waiting to see if he can see after his vitrectomy. (Google it… but only if you have a strong stomach!) Didn’t help that he just had to be cardioverted (again, google it. LOL!) So, I need to stay home and be his helpmate.

You guys have fun! So cool of you to gift someone this. I will spread the word!

Sure wish I could be there! :(

Never attended the WPPI conference! It would be a great experience to learn and network with other professionals. I always had the passion for photography and just recently a friend encouraged me to pursue it. Unfortunately, due to finacial issues I can't afford to go, but I would love to. I know I would have blast attending all the classes, networking with other photographers, learning about all the new gears. I really wished I had the opportunity to attend this conference, I am sure it would help me grow my photography carreer. Thank you for the opportunity.

Melisa Draper - January 30, 2012 - 9:19 am

Awesome Contest!

Last year was my first year going to WPPI I went alone and really knew nobody! I am shy and had a really hard time putting myself out there introducing myself. This year will be my second year going and I feel like I have grown alot as a photographer and myself. At different photography event I have forced myself to introduce myself to others and I plan to do the same this year at WPPI. I am so excited to meet all the Showiteers that I have created relationships with over the internet too!

Tania - January 30, 2012 - 9:12 am

This will be my first year at WPPI. I have already booked my plane and hotel at great rates, and thought I had a free WPPI Pass Secured, but it fell through and I never heard anything. The kicker is I just found out I am part of a reduction and lost my full time corporate job. It’s a blessing in disguise because I’ll be able to focus on some other things, namely photography now, but I am worried about coming up with the extra $400 for a conference pass. I would so appreciate a free one and promise to pay it forward!!!

Bridget Blakley Mora - January 30, 2012 - 4:02 pm

Last year was the 1st time for WPPI as it was my 1st year as a full time photographer! I book my trip and left for Vegas all in a total of 3 hours last year. I know not much of a planner…lol I was in total bliss last year! However, because of being spontaneous ( which is a good thing most of the time) I feel like I didn't get as much of WPPI as I could have. With that said, now in the 2nd year as a full time photographer and all the projects I have going on like many other money is tight! To me WPPI is like having my battery re-charged, having my gas tank re-filled or having a "Me Day" complete with hair make-up and nail done! It's the lift need to go into the next year in a business where you find yourself alone most of the time. Knowing I'm not alone and I have peers who in any giving situation I can call on for help and advice!

Donella Brazo - January 30, 2012 - 3:46 pm

I feel like I need to go… for some reason, I feel like this is MY year to break out… WPPI would be an awesome experience for me, and only add fuel to the fire that is ready to be alarm. Its a cool thing you are doing, Emma! Good luck to all.

Ali Brannan-Photography - January 30, 2012 - 3:46 pm

This will be our first year going to WPPI. I feel like this would be an amazing opportunity for us to learn all we can. With how expensive our trip was we couldn't afford another $400 on top of everything else so we stayed with showit united. We have so much to learn when it comes to this business and I would love to make this trip worth every penny and come back with a clearer mind regarding our business.

Ann Keen - January 30, 2012 - 8:42 am

I have never been to WPPI before and would love to go but as many others financially it is out of reach. This year I am driving distance from Vegas so my husband and I are off for Showit United and I figure I will pop over to the trade show. To kind of get a feel for it. I would love to win a pass to WPPI. I am hungry to learn and would love the opportunity to feed my hunger. :) (Sorry can you tell I am hungry right now?!) :)

Janell W - January 30, 2012 - 2:44 pm

We can't afford it- but after this weekend with creativeLIVE, I feel so inspired and I know so many people going. It would be amazing to go. Thanks for doing this!

Emily 'emme' Dowzak - January 30, 2012 - 1:28 pm

dream.

Emily 'emme' Dowzak - January 30, 2012 - 1:28 pm

Dearest Emma, it is my fist trek to WPPI snd Showit United. I wwould love to maximize my time and meet/see as much as possible. I welcome the opportunity to be challenged and d

Rachael Tilstra Schoellen - January 30, 2012 - 1:12 pm

This is my first year and I initially only wanted to go for Showit United (whatWHAT?) and the more I've looked into it, the more I see how much I may be missing out on by not attending WPPI. Unless I win a contest, I will not be able to attend the classes so fingers crossed! I want to go because this is my first time being able to get some training and insight from some of my industry heroes! I'm a bit of an island in this small town, and I cannot WAIT to absorb and experience all the insight, wisdom and awesomeness!

Cristina Sullivan - January 30, 2012 - 1:54 am

Hi there! Well last year was my first year at wppi and I was so incredibly charged, filled with so many ideas for wedding photography when I left. Last year was my first year doing weddings. I have been doing maternity and newborn photography before that. Anyways, I have so much too learn cause woah baby, wedding photography is a whole nother world!!! I’m also hoping to take my gear this year and actually come home with some images to build my bridal portfolio which is close to well..nonexistent! I’ve been able to second shoot weddings in 2011, but the photographers I have worked for either don’t allow me to use the images or want me to use their name when posting. And I totally understand where they are coming from, but because of that my wedding images portfolio is tiny :( another reason I hope to win: last year I met you guys briefly at beckers party and I would to meet up with you all again as well as more of all the wonderful people from (b) school. I’m realizing now just how important it is to network with other photogs. Ok I think I’ll stop writing now ;0) thanks for this contest. That’s really cool of you guys to do!!!

Charisse - January 29, 2012 - 11:18 pm

Thank you very much for this Contest…. And keeping my Passion Alive!!

Cynthia Layne - January 30, 2012 - 6:18 am

I am dying to go to WPPI to absorb all the excitment and knowledge. This will be my first!

After Shotz - January 30, 2012 - 6:17 am

I have been asked by so many Photographers am I going? And sadly I just can't afford it. Would I love to go? Absolutely! I have hit a rut in my Shooting, and truly need all the help I can. I'm in a Rut! But I will not quit, Ill just ask Questions. But for WPPI I would give anything to go but just can't afford it. So if you think that I'm the one, I would be eternally GRATEFUL!
